For me, painting celebrates the moment. It is a primal discovery of normality and impossibility cultivating everyday sensations that can be seen or felt. The surface is built up with layers of colour that stimulates a range of complimentary opposite feelings dealing with flatness, space, stillness, movement chaos and order. The paintings create each other. When I draw, I emphasis body scale and spontaneity of movements. Colour results from drawing. My practise of Tai Chi Chu’an over the past thirty years has opened up insights into the function of vital energy in the body and mind that has for me transformed my paintings from what has been commonly viewed as abstract expressionism.
The paintings are not easily definable. They usually take several years to resolve and the surfaces are mostly active and complex in their range of tactile sensations and textures.
