Heavy Breathing

Weathering steel

Height : 60cm   Width : 120cm   Depth : 30cm

I am always drawn to nature, so for this show 'Coming up for air', I immediately thought of trees and the critical part they play in the air that we breathe.
They are, essentially, our external lungs, pulling in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. The larger the tree, the more oxygen produced.
My piece 'Heavy Breathing' is based on a series of tree rings, using weathering steel which will oxidise in a unique way. Each section is connected in layers to form a reclining sculpture that gently curves upwards towards the outer edges.
