Fungi Town

This Autumn, Genetic Moo LG are exhibiting two artworks in Hay Castle as part of Fungi Town.

Composition and decomposition, creation and destruction: these are the fundamental processes at the heart of The Mesh, an interactive artwork which allows you to experience what it is like to dissolve into, and emerge from, a living structure. Inspired by the behaviour of fungi, The Mesh grows in response to your movements, echoing the way fungal hyphae branch out in multiple directions, testing different pathways until one connects to a source of nourishment.

It’s Alive! Fungi is a living digital artwork that transforms a view of a familiar place into something uncanny and ever-shifting. A live webcam gazes out across Hay Town, transmitting the colourful bustle of its everyday life in pixelated detail. layered within this digital surface are three fungal species that coexist in dynamic tension: one consumes the image, a second weaves hyphal threads mending the disrupted picture and a third emerges opportunistically, producing fruiting bodies where chaos and order brush against one another.

Sharing the gallery is a magical collection of other-worldly sculptures grown from mushrooms created by Smithy. Smithy lives in Hay and has been growing reishi for many years, a practice that involves huge experimentation, patience, attention to detail and an artistic eye. His sculptures are an astonishing testament to the diversity, playfulness and beautiful weirdness of the fungal kingdom.
