Jeff Lowe LG discusses his life and work in this short documentary by Paul Murphy.
Making an 18 minute film about Jeff Lowe and his working practice was, I must say, very difficult. This was not because I had a dearth of material or because I struggled in some way to find interesting things to film. The difficulty lay in the fact, there was just so much material and so many interesting aspects of Jeff’s life to squeeze into such a short film. I have often said that if Jeff had have been born 2000 years ago he would, for sure, have been an Egyptian Pharaoh, building, creating and making with an energy and passion that never seems to end. This was the Jeff Lowe that I wanted to convey in my film. His sympathetic and creative restoration of old buildings and his ability as an artist to take the most basic of materials and create his beautifully unique form of sculpture has amazed and inspired so many people over the years. Most of us only ever get to see an artist’s work when it is displayed in a gallery or in a museum, so the opportunity for me to observe and film Jeff as he worked was a real bonus. Watching him bend and contort those huge sheets of metal and listening to him as he would make decisions of the most finite detail was a real insight into how he as an artist thinks and works while pursuing his vision of a finished work. My hope is that ‘A Life In Making’ allows you the opportunity to have that same experience and I hope that it inspires you in the same way that it inspired me.
