A contemporary painting perspective.
This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to view the work of leading figurative artists, both contemporary and historic.
The exhibited works reflect the artists’ personal ideas and processes to explore visual appearances. For an artist, translating what is seen onto a flat surface is complex. Therefore, these artists observe and work directly from their subject to question the elusive and beautiful appearances of the visible world, searching for ‘evidence’.

Historic works
The works create new dialogues between important historic loans and contemporary responses. This exhibition now brings them together for the first time. In particular, the historic artists include co-founders of the Euston Road School (1937-39): Claude Rogers, Graham Bell, Victor Pasmore and Sir William Coldstream. Additionally, the show features their students and associates: Patrick George, Myles Murphy, Christopher Pemberton, Howard Brown, Patrick Symons, and Euan Uglow.
The influential Euston Road School reacted to the avant-garde in the 1930s. It was known for its teaching of objective observation and the need to look harder to question what is seen. Additionally, works by our gallery’s namesake, Thelma Hulbert, are also featured, as they reflect her involvement in the Euston Road School alongside Coldstream and Rogers.
