PRESENT IMPERFECT – a grammatical tense which presents the action in the present as continuous, not yet over. Used for actions that are performed regularly or often, or for statements about an existing condition.

Present Imperfect is an exhibition by Alice Sheppard Fidler where she weaves together different strands of her practice, including sculptural works, photography, collage, and performance. Each day, she will be in practice with a visiting artist to engage in live conversations, physical labour, and re-imaginings of her work. By allowing her modular sculptures to evolve she will invite unpredictable outcomes and spark a playful exploration of the making process. The exhibition will culminate in a conversation with curator Becca Pelly-Fry on the final day.

Guest artists: Emma Gregory, Martin Cody, Freya Gabie, Nick Grellier, Barbara Beyer LG, Tris Bucaro

“Alice and I are both members of the Royal Society of Sculptors, we are currently both showing work in One Island- Many Visions and I was one of the invited artists at THISS 2025 curated by Alice at her artist retreat The Hide in the Cotswolds,” says Barbara. “On Friday 17th October we shared an afternoon of practice and conversation as an open event.”
