Stephen Carley LG: Recent Work

A selection of recent artworks and exciting updates from Stephen Carley LG.

Delighted, chuffed, thrilled, honoured, etc etc.
Seriously though, this is a big deal for me.
Got a piece in the Trinity Buoy Wharf drawing prize exhibition.
But of course I’ve ‘pushed it’ a little bit…
Drawing as performance for film… But I think it’s right, for me.

So I thought to myself;

‘Why not take the line, just the line. And take it for a walk. No, better than that, dance with it. No, this will be funny – wrap myself up like an Egyptian mummy in it. Perhaps pertinently – roll it up roll it out like till reciept. Or measure it out in metre lengths like a tailor or maybe a funeral director…
Nah – just drop it in an unruly bundle from the top of a ladder…’

The hand, the hand. The hand, the hand.
Thoughts of another finger. Diving down into a cellar.
The line, the line. The line, the line.

From Phillip Guston By Vic Chesnutt.

Looking forward to visiting the show asap.
And taking part in the end of exhibition talks on 4th October – ooh, not long to go!
And of course seeing it go off on tour… lovely.

Drawing is possibly;
“A discourse between definition and the unresolved, the systematic and chaotic, certainty and speculation.” The Good Drawing, CCW Bright 7.

QUEEN INVERTED KING DOUBLE X THRONE. FRAGMENTS AND STUFF.
Has been selected for the Harley Open exhibition 2026.
Again, really chuffed with this one. Feels like an important one.

Found objects and detritus, acrylic and spray paint, varnish on various substrates.
238cm X 156cm.

The Harley Open exhibition returns with 138 works on show by artists, makers and heritage craft practitioners from across the region.
Selected from more than 700 submissions, this year’s exhibition celebrates the breadth of creativity found within 100 miles of the Harley Foundation. From photography, painting and pottery, to canal art and clog making, the exhibition brings together a rich mix of contemporary art and heritage craft.

Painting is dead. Long live Painting.
Painting can ‘fuck right off’. All hail Painting the ‘King of Art’.
Oh Painting you are so old and tired.
Hey Painting, this is fun and new and funky and all that.
On repeat. A locked groove.
The fable of ‘The Baby and the Bath water’.
The baby is bruised and upset. The bathroom is soaking wet.
The mirror is steamed up. The soap is impregnated with hairs…

The exhibition is on ‘till January 3rd 2027… I’m planning to go over in the next couple of weeks to ‘have a kneb’ (as they say).

There is something in ‘expanded painting’ and my current mindset that is expressed succinctly in this quote;

“First you’ll close your eyes to the pictures. Then you’ll close your eyes to the memory.
Then you’ll close your eyes to the facts. Then you’ll close your eyes to the entire context”.
Harun Farocki.

I’m excited to say I’m part of a very unnusual and original floating exhibition called ‘Olive Oyl’ in and on a boat called ‘Popeye’ departing from Redhill Marina then cruising into Nottingham from the 23rd of October. I’ll be collaborating with Kate Jacob…Watch this space for more details…
We’d love to have you on board to see the work we’re making.

In the meantime, we need to raise some funds to cover boat hire, so we’re selling prints! These will be printed by Matthew Conduit, a specialist in Fine Art printing at YAS, are all A3 and are on sale for £72 each (including p&p or delivery).
