“We present a (first edition) series of prints made from the original watercolours painted by Arthur Wilson (1927-2020) whose consistent output of art was produced from his studio at the bottom of the garden in Wingate Road Hammersmith

From the 1950’s until his death in March 2020 Arthur Wilson created constructions, evolving fresh ways of approaching his singular vision of waves, initially influenced by his National Service experience with radar, later combined with his fascination with the imprint of sea currents and tidal movements above and below the water’s surface and sand.

The notable features of his works are distinctive 3D constructions and dazzling 2D watercolours, which suggest abstract wave forms. Although the artworks reference the sea Wilson did not wish to represent it. Each abstract work– resulting not from chance, spontaneity or gesture, but from observing the underlying physical principles of waves – was meticulously plotted on paper using rigorous mathematical formulae. Here art delivers a parallel pleasure to that offered by nature.

In later years he restricted his palette to primary colours, blended tones were an emotional distraction away from his focus on form. Ironically the more conceptual and purist the work became, moving away from depicting the sea to a pure geometry of wave form, the more the viewer could imagine halcyon days on the beach. A few zig-zags could suggest the time of day, direction of wind, depth of water, height of swell, cool undercurrent and heat in the air.

The depth, consistency and development of his enquiry is breathtaking: this small representation of his 2-dimensional work shows just a selection.
