My recent paintings refer to the experience of traveling through urban spaces, particularly subways, staircases & escalators & the way commuters movement & interaction is defined within them.

Reference material is gathered using a small digital camera, evoking a play between glimpsing, framing, slippage & distortion.

The selection of images that have a potential for paintings is very problematic & however much one tries to establish criteria, the process is essentially opaque. Some of the paintings rely on images used in combination & various degrees of transformation occur from the source photographs. Hopefully the results are a fruitful encounter between intention & chance.

Generally I want the paintings to speak of the unsettling experience of everyday urban life, of its anxiety, alienation but also its excitement
