Neil Weerdmeester

Beauty in the age of digital manipulation, stills in a mediated world that conjure up a hidden narrative beyond the surface of the work. Caught between the mediums where fact mixes with fiction my work seeks to open up interpretation and questions our need for answers.

Exploring the boundary between authenticity and truth, the perfection of the mechanically reproduced image contends for a quality reserved only for painting. The photograph combines with the seductive gloss painting to saturate the viewer with a flawed beauty that evokes an uneasy sense of privacy recalling past memories and desires.

The captured moment of the split second and the passionate gesture of direct action, a photograph drawn from our collective memory, a snapshot from the cinema verité of our world, an image, a recording of a time and a place, like the painting of a picture.
