Sayako Sugawara

In my practice I use the cognitive associations that occur in the materiality of photographic processes, moving image and installation to explore notions of memory, imagination, analysis, poetics, stillness and movement.

I strive to bring the past and the present together creating new narratives with the objects and spaces encountered, questioning the very nature of memory. The practical process of making is very important in my work, whether using the darkroom, drawing or in action, while exploring the scale of the space and the materials. This leads and informs the majority of my thinking.

Central to my current practice is experimentation with sustainable and environmentally responsible materials that produce unpredictable outcomes, leading to a wider range of unexpected associations. I follow this process of observing and responding to explore memories and imagination while dealing with the physical properties of the materials themselves.
