We breathe the air in which we are immersed; we breathe its matter, its information, and its emotional charge. We also share the air in which we are immersed, exhaling our own internal atmospheres. Through breathing, we both affect and are affected by air and what air is made of and represents.

My work over the last five years has been situated within the practice of drawing. ‘Variants of Concern’, as a body of work is a personal document. A testimony to a specific time, lockdown and the pandemic. A very personal account.
The drawings are material witnesses. My hand moving across a surface, recounting time, precarity and feeling; allowing fragments and complexities and the fear of the unseen to become visible. The mask became the primary motif; an emblem, a metaphor, and a vehicle to interrogate and re-present my experiences.
The drawings also allowed me to develop my thinking on the relationship between writing and drawing. I believe writing is drawing. As I drew, I wrote and as I wrote, I drew. No hierarchy; an echo of the democracy of the practice of drawing.
